Our Three Key Initiatives:

Charlie Sumption Scholarships

The fund currently offers Secondary School and Higher Education Scholarships to selected students at Mutunyi Primary School. Mutunyi is in an extremely poor rural area in Northern Kenya, adjoining Lewa, which has been heavily affected by Aids and famine. The pupils are fiercely hard working and ambitious; a select few even arrive at school before 7 am each morning and stay until after 5 pm in order to compete for the CSMF scholarship. Unfortunately, universal secondary education in Kenya is not free, so many children are unable to afford to continue in education, depriving them of the opportunity to fulfill their true potential.

A Secondary School Scholarship currently costs a modest $800 (about £500) per student per annum for their four years study. Would you like to help sponsor a child from Mutunyi School through CSMF?

Mutunyi School Library

Reading is essential to improve the language skills of the children at any school. In Africa, learning English is very important and useful skill. In the Summer of 2009, we bought a shipping container and converted it into a school library. The library is still desperately short of books due to the high cost of sending books to Kenya. Would you like to help this project by providing funding to purchase or send books? All such donors can choose to have their name inside their kindly donated books.

Water Conservation Project

2009 is an El Niño year, which has caused the rains to fail in Kenya. We wanted to show the people of Mutunyi village how to conserve water, by building gutters on the school buildings and connecting them to water tanks. To date, volunteers have built and attached gutters to a third of the buildings at the school, costing £500 in materials. We would like to be able to complete this project with additional guttering. Would you like to help with some of the cost or even be a volunteer builder?
